would like to commend the Government of Uganda for the 11% tax rise on cigarettes as mentioned in the proposed Excise Tariff Amendment Bill dated June 28, 2011. This was partly due to anti-tobacco NGOs and the World Health Organization urging government to increase taxes on cigarettes. Naturally, tobacco companies are not happy about this; but what about the number of smokers who die annually as a result of smoking-relateddiseases like lung cancer and heart disease?
