What happened to customer care?

What is about today's society? Everywhere you go be it on the public transport, shops or supermarkets, no one seems to care anymore. To get a "thank you or please" is now so rare that it takes me by surprise when it's spoken. People on the whole seem miserable or depressed or even downright rude when you are being served.
