Get slums out of Kampala but don’t raze Namanve

Almost every Ugandan loves to hate slums. They are dirty, congested, a haven for criminals and a sore spot in what would otherwise be a clean, modern capital city. Good news is that the government plans to demolish Kampala’s most notorious slums: Kisenyi, Mulago, Katanga and Kivulu, among others.

Laudable as the move is, the downside is that the state intends to destroy the only remaining part of Namanve Forest Reserve to construct low-cost housing units to create homes for the former slum
